Pembrokeshire care home set to expand with vacant flats approval
A call to use vacant flats to expand a Pembrokeshire care home due to increased demand for facilities by the council has been given the go-ahead.
Apley Lodge care home applied to Pembrokeshire County Council to convert two flats at Apley Terrace, Pembroke Dock, into extra accommodation.
The flats are empty and were previously occupied by a tenant unconnected to the care home.
A supporting statement accompanying the application said: “Due to the increased demand of the local authority for extra beds our aim is to create four bedrooms/WC aligned with the residential care home, there are two current self-contained flats unoccupied.
The statement added: “This would lend itself perfectly to the current residential home and complement the environment accordingly.”
Pembroke Dock Town Council supported the application, but one objection cited possible loss of light, overshadowing, water run-off and loss of privacy.
An officer’s report recommending approval said the site was a care home on the prominent corner of Apley Terrace and Bush Street, with two self-contained flats behind it.
The report said the two flats would become four en-suite bedrooms linked to the main care home by walkways, leaving no separate homes on the site.
The report said the four extra en-suite bedrooms would increase the home’s capacity and respond to rising demand for specialist care in the county.
County planners approved the application, subject to conditions.
