Schools Fly The Flag For Pembrokeshire

Two primary schools from Pembrokeshire have narrowly missed out on a chance to play football at Wembley. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

Talented footballers from Hook and Narberth schools finished second and third in their respective groups in a competition run amongst Premier League Football Clubs. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

Had either won, they would have represented Swansea in the finals played at Wembley. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

Both schools represented Pembrokeshire in the regional final after they beat off the best from 30 schools in a competition organised between Sport Pembrokeshire (Pembrokeshire County Council’s Sports Development department) and Swansea City Football Community Trust. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

Over 350 boys & girls from 30 primary schools across the County took part in the tournament that was held in Haverfordwest. Students from Pembrokeshire College football academy helped by refereeing and officiating matches. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

Sport Pembrokeshire have also partnered with the Fair Trade In Football Campaign, kicking off with a series of tournaments using Fairtrade Bala Sport Fairtrade stitched footballs. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

The winning teams for these tournaments received a Fair Trade in Football Campaign Fairtrade stitched football for their school, with winners and runners-up in every tournament presented with a Fairtrade Granola breakfast bar. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

Councillor Elwyn Morse, the Cabinet member for Culture, Sport and Leisure offered his congratulations to Narberth and Hook saying: ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

“The players that represented Hook and Narberth can be proud of what they have achieved. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

“To beat off the stiff competition in the Pembrokeshire tournament was a great achievement and they took that confidence forward when they played other schools from other areas of South Wales and proved what a talented group of footballers they are.” ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​
