Schools results welcomed

School performance in Pembrokeshire is improving according to the Welsh Government evaluation of all schools in Wales. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

The process of categorisation results in a nationally agreed level of support required by each school to improve standards and provision. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

“The process for Pembrokeshire this year has seen a significant increase in the number of primary schools in the green sector” said Councillor Sue Perkins, the County Council’s Cabinet member for Education and Safeguarding.” ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

Under the system there are four categories – green, yellow, amber and red. Schools in the green category are already doing well and are deemed to be in need of the least support while schools in the red category are those identified as needing the most support. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

Councillor Perkins continued: “Now over 80 per cent of our primary schools are in categories requiring the lowest level of support, yellow and green.” ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

“The secondary schools saw an increase in the number of schools needing the amber level of support but a reduced number of schools needing the highest level of support red. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

“All schools receive support even if they are categorised as a green school. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

“Schools in those categories requiring the most support will now benefit from additional support and resources so that they can improve their performance. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

“While we are pleased to have only one school in the red category as opposed to four last year, we will continue to challenge and support schools to provide improved outcomes for pupils.” ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

Councillor Perkins added: “The categorisation process is an excellent tool in helping Pembrokeshire County Council identify schools that require extra support.” ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

Betsan O’Connor, managing director of the ERW alliance of six local authorities including Swansea which are working together to deliver further education improvements, welcomed the results. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

She said: “It’s pleasing to see schools are becoming more resilient and now need less support. It is also good to see a change in culture, as increasingly the support is coming from other schools. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

“There will be some schools which are disappointed about elements of the outcomes published, but we will be providing support for those schools in the areas identified for improvement.” ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​
