Treat For Tenby School
Grand Slam Winning Rugby star Tom Shanklin spent a day at Tenby Church in Wales Primary School recently.
Shanklin, Tenby born and one of only a handful of players to have won two Six Nations Grand Slams visited the school in his role as a volunteer with the NSPCC to present an assembly on child safety before taking a rugby master class in the afternoon.
Mr Shanklin assisted NSPCC’s Lara Allen who led the assembly that tackled the tough subjects of keeping safe and the importance of speaking out if they had any worries.
These assemblies were followed by workshops for pupils in Year 5 and Year 6.
“It was certainly an action packed day,” said John Palmer, the schools’ head teacher.
“The assembly was an important one and in the following workshop the pupils showed a tremendous level of maturity when discussing these important themes.
“After lunch they were able to relax a little and enjoy the rugby sessions although that’s not to say it wasn’t hard work. Tom Shanklin certainly put them through their paces!
“It was a pleasure to have him and Lara at the school. As a native of the town he was as delighted to see the new school as the children were in meeting him.
“He even spotted some potential rugby stars of the future!”
