Work Begins On Extension
Work has begun on a major new extension to Ysgol Bro Gwaun in Fishguard.
The £12.9 million development will include 21st Century innovative teaching and learning environment, a Learning Resource Centre, new community facilities and a satellite unit of the Haverfordwest-based Portfield School.
The project which makes up part of Authority’s 21st Century Schools programme is jointly funded by Pembrokeshire County Council and the Welsh Government and is scheduled for completion in October 2017.
Main contractors for the building are BAM Construction with Mott MacDonald providing project and cost management services.
“This is an exciting day for the pupils and community of Fishguard, Goodwick and the surrounding area,” said Cabinet Member for Education, Councillor David Lloyd.
“This new facility will provide current and future pupils of the school with an inspiring environment in which to learn and I’m sure the community will also benefit from it.”
Cllr Lloyds’ views were shared by headteacher Mrs Nerys Nicholas who believes the building can help motivate the students.
“It’s incredible to think that in one year’s time we will have a new building here educating the elders of tomorrow. It’s an exciting time for the school and I’m sure that the pupils will be eager to explore the extension when it is finally opened next autumn.
“It will show that with hard work and good planning a lot can be achieved in a short space of time and that is an inspiration to everyone.”
