ust over 40 per cent of schools in Bridgend County Borough have received a top ‘green’ rating in the Welsh Government’s colour coded categorisation system. ‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌

The percentage of ‘green’ schools – which signifies that a school is ‘highly effective’ – has risen from 24.6 per cent in 2014/15 to 40.4 per cent this year. ‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌

The new school categorisation details also reveal that Bridgend County Borough has the highest percentage of ‘green’ schools in the Central South region, which also includes schools in Cardiff, the Vale of Glamorgan, Rhondda Cynon Taf and Merthyr Tydfil. ‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌

The percentage of ‘green’ primary schools in Bridgend County Borough has increased from 26.5 per cent to 41.7 per cent, while for secondary schools the percentage of ‘green’ schools is up from 12.5 per cent to 33.3 per cent. ‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌

Under the categorisation system, schools are placed in one of four categories – green, yellow, amber or red. The system looks at the quality of leadership, teaching and learning as well as statistical data and is intended to identify areas where more support may be needed to ensure that schools can deliver the very best results for their pupils. ‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌

In addition to evaluating schools, it also categorises them using specific performance measures and an assessment of each school’s proposals on how they intend to deliver improvements. ‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌

Cllr Huw David, Cabinet Member for Children and Young People, said: “While it is important not to view the school categorisation as any kind of ranking system, we are still delighted with this year’s results, which see the percentage of Bridgend County Borough schools receiving a ‘green’ rating being the highest in the region. ‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌

“Overall, there are 33 schools in the green and yellow categories and seven classed as being amber or red, so the new categorisation process has demonstrated some interesting results.” ‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌
