Abercynon Leisure Centres New Gym Opens
Rhondda Cynon Taf Council’s impressive revamp of Abercynon Leisure Centre, which forms part of its £1.7m investment for leisure facilities, is complete!
The brand new gym is open – with everyone being invited to enjoy their first gym session for free!
The fantastic new state-of-the-art facility will open to the public tomorrow morning (Wednesday), following a £700,000 investment to reinvigorate the facility. The investment by the Council has doubled the gym space at the centre, which now houses over 80 top-of-the-range stations.
To mark the reopening of the popular facility in Abercynon, everyone is being offered the chance to enjoy a free introductory session at the brand new gym.
Some of the amazing changes at the centre include:
- The building has been remodelled to create a new Do-Jo/Multifunction room which can be used for activities including children’s soft play and fitness classes.
- The gym has been moved from its previous first floor location to a new ground floor location.
- A new spin room has been created.
- A new dry changing area has been created along with ground floor toilets.
- The building’s entrance and reception area has also been refurbished as part of the revamp of the facility.

Despite all the on-going works at the centre, the council has kept disruption for customers to a minimum during these major works with many facilities and classes remaining open throughout the construction period.
County Borough Councillor Ann Crimmings, Cabinet Member for Environment, Leisure and Culture, who has led the Council’s investment in Leisure programme said:
“The investment in Abercynon Sports Centre has delivered huge improvements to the gym and wider facilities and I’m sure current and prospective users are looking forward to getting active in this modernised and now state-of-the-art facility.
“We have made the decision to invest in our leisure facilities to improve the offering as by doing so we can attract more members and make our leisure centres more sustainable in challenging financial times – and this approach is working. Where we have made key investments in other leisure centres such as Sobell, Bronwydd and Rhondda Sports Centre, significant increases in membership have been generated because of the quality of the facilities we have provided.
“This approach is making leisure services in RCT sustainable into the future and is protecting these valued services from the cuts which continued to be imposed upon the public sector by the UK government.
“Despite these cuts the Cabinet recognises the importance of investing in our key priorities that is why we have allocated £200m over the next three years to improve areas such as Leisure and Outdoor Leisure Facilities, Play Areas, Highways and Structures, Transport Infrastructure, Flood Alleviation, Schools, Recycling Facilities, Housing and Town and Village Centres.
“The significant changes which have taken place in Abercynon are likely to have the same impact. I was delighted to join local Councillors Rhys Lewis and Alby Davies at the recent Fun Day to see first-hand the results of the £700k investment by the Council.
“To showcase the changes and enhancements we will be offer free trial sessions for everyone to experience the improvements; with this investment in our leisure facilities, coupled with our attractive Leisure for Life membership options, there really isn’t a better time to get fit and active in RCT.”
