Design Works Set For Brook Street Footbridge Ahead Of £1m Investment
The Council is to fund design works for the Brook Street footbridge, Ystrad Rhondda, ahead of a planned investment of over £1m which will see the bridge replaced next year.
This investment forms part of Rhondda Cynon Taf Council’s multi-million-pound (£23m) Highways, Transportation, Infrastructures and Strategic Projects (HTISP) Investment Programme.
The Council recognises that the footbridge which is used by over 600 people every day needs replacing and the planned works would see over £1m invested in the bridge which links the communities of Ystrad and Gelli as well as providing vital pedestrian access to Ystrad Rhondda train station.
Contractors are being commissioned to look at design and build options, which will need detailed consideration ahead of the build stage of this complex and technically challenging project.
Over £53m has already been invested in improving and repairing the County Borough’s Highways and Transportation Infrastructures and on Strategic Projects since 2011.
This work demonstrates Rhondda Cynon Taf Council’s commitment to maintain and improve the road infrastructure for the benefit of residents, businesses and visitors alike.
Leader of Rhondda Cynon Taf County Borough Council, Councillor Andrew Morgan, who is also Cabinet Member for Highways, said:
“Brook Street footbridge is a vital link for pedestrians in Ystrad Rhondda, which is why we are looking to undertake these essential works.
“Brook Street footbridge is just one of the hundreds of schemes that will benefit from an investment programme of over £23m which will see a number of vital Highways Improvements, Infrastructure, and Strategic Projects undertaken over the next three years – this is on top of the £53m we have already invested since 2011.
“The works to the footbridge, following an agreed design, will allow us to replace the existing structure next year, with a new purpose built bridge that will improve this well-used safe route for pedestrians.”
