Former Workingmen’s Club in Rhondda Set to Become Flats

A former workingmen’s club in the Rhondda could soon be turned into flats.
An application for the proposed conversion of The Marxian Working Men’s Club and Institute in Court Street, Tonypandy into six one-bedroom flats with parking and amenity areas is due to be considered by Rhondda Cynon Taf (RCT)’s planning committee on Thursday, October 24.
This is a resubmission of a previous application that proposed the conversion of the property into eight flats that was later withdrawn by the applicant following a number of concerns over the standard of living accommodation proposed and over-development of the building
While the scheme would largely involve internal conversion of the property, the proposal would also see the existing hall to the rear demolished and replaced by a two-storey rear extension.
There would be three flats on both floors of the property, each with direct access to the rear amenity space, with the ground-floor flats also having an individual patio area.
To create access from the first floor flats, a steel staircase would be installed at the rear of the property.
The proposal would also see the creation of five off-street parking spaces to the rear served by the existing service lane.
There were no public letters of objection received about this application.
In recommending approval, planning officers said that the proposed
residential use would be compatible with the surrounding land uses and would not result in an adverse impact upon either the character of the site, the amenity of neighbouring occupiers or highway safety. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​
