New Crossing Facilities For Church Village

Much-needed new pedestrian crossing facilities are set to be installed along the B4595 (/Main Road at its junction with Station Road /St Illtyds Road, Church Village). ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

The works form part of Rhondda Cynon Taf Council’s multi-million-pound (£23m) Highways, Transportation, Infrastructures and Strategic Projects (HTISP) Investment Programme. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

The Council is investing up to £100,000 to undertake the project to ensure that pedestrians have a safe place to cross. Works are now underway and will last for 4-6 weeks. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

In order to carry out these essential works full temporary traffic management will be in place. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

The existing pelican crossing on Main Road (east of Fagins) will be removed and replaced by new pedestrian phased traffic signals on all 4 arms of the existing traffic signal controlled junction of Main Road, Station Road, and St Illtyds Road. The existing traffic signal equipment will be replaced along with the associated dropped kerbs and tactile paving. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

Leader of Rhondda Cynon Taf County Borough Council, Councillor Andrew Morgan, who is also Cabinet Member for Highways, said: ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

“The Cabinet recognises the importance of investing in our key priorities that is why we have allocated £200m over the next three years to improve areas such as Leisure and Outdoor Leisure Facilities, Play Areas, Highways and Structures, Transport Infrastructure, Flood Alleviation, Schools, Recycling Facilities, Housing and Town and Village Centres. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

“We will be investing over £23m in Highways Improvements, Infrastructure, and Strategic Projects over the next three years – this is on top of the £53m we have already invested since 2011 meaning that by 2018/19 we will have invested over £76m in these key areas in less than a decade. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

“It is hoped that these latest works will increase road safety along this popular road for pedestrians, whilst improving traffic flow for motorists in the area. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

“Whilst this work demonstrates the Council’s commitment to maintain and improve structures for the benefit of residents, businesses and visitors alike, the targeted works are likely to cause disruptions to pedestrians and motorists and I would reassure our residents that every measure has been taken to minimise this where possible. I would like to urge residents to continue to support us whilst these essential works are carried out as it is for their longer term benefit.” ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

The works and planned weekend road closures that are in place along various roads/streets from Coedely to Tonteg, including Church Road are being carried out as part of the Pen y Cymoedd Wind Energy Project – these works are separate to those being undertaken by the Council to install the new crossing point. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

As a result of the Pen y Cymoedd windfarm works, Church Road, Tonteg will be closed for essential works on consecutive Saturdays and Sundays from 23rd July 2016 until further notice, public transport passengers are therefore advised that Edwards service 90 (Pontypridd to Gwaunmiskin) will not operate via Church Road, Tonteg. Passengers are advised that the no90 Service will operate along the main road in Tonteg Via Cae Fardre, Church Village through to Gwaunmiskin Terminus. Diversions for motorists are signposted in the area. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​
