Procurement process begins for Cynon Gateway link road contractor in Rhondda Cynon Taf

The process to appoint a contractor to design and build the Cynon Gateway link road has begun.
An update from Rhondda Cynon Taf (RCT) Council says officers have started an important procurement process to appoint a main contractor to design and build the project which the authority says remains a commitment.
The end of this process and the final contract award are expected to take place during 2027.
Once this has been completed the council proposes to appoint a contractor to develop the scheme’s detailed design.
Depending on the contractor’s proposals this phase could include the first activity taking place on the ground with works supporting the design phase.
The proposal would include a new 1.2km link road connecting the A4059 Aberdare Bypass, at a point between Trecynon and Penywaun roundabouts, to the A465 Heads of the Valleys Road at Croesbychan.
The council says the scheme has the advantages of strengthening north-south transport links, improving access across the area, easing traffic congestion in Llwydcoed and other local routes, and supporting economic growth within the Cynon Valley.
The project has been revised following the roads review report in February 2023 to make sure it aligns closely with Welsh Government’s transport policy.
Earlier this year the council received £2.01m from Welsh Government through the Cardiff Capital Region to develop the project in 2026-27.
Alongside this £603,000 was set aside for the scheme in the council’s highways and engineering 2026-27 capital programme agreed in March. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​
