Registration for the famous Nos Galan Road Races in Mountain Ash on New Year’s Eve opens this month.
Rhondda Cynon Taf (RCT) Council has confirmed that people can register to take part in the races from Monday, September 16 at 10am.
As with previous years, spaces will be released in stages to ensure as many people as possible have a chance to secure one.
Race spaces will be released from 10am on Monday, September 16, then from noon on Monday, September 23, and then from 6pm on Monday, September 30.
Race categories on the evening include the elite men’s 5k, the elite women’s 5k, the fun run 5k (fancy dress optional), the children’s 600m for ages eight and nine and 10-11 and the children’s 1.2k for ages 12–13 and 14-15.
Thousands of spectators attend each year to cheer on the runners and there’s entertainment, fireworks and a mystery runner.
The event gets under way with the children’s race categories before the arrival of the celebrity mystery runner carrying the Nos Galan torch and igniting the beacon in the centre of town.
In 2023, Gareth Thomas and Laura McAllister were the mystery runners.
In previous years, guests have included Linford Christie, Nigel Owens, Chris Coleman and James Hook.
Following the arrival of the mystery runner, there will be a firework display before the evening ends with the fun run and elite races.
Race spaces will be available online at www.nosgalan.co.uk
The council said businesses who want to advertise in the Nos Galan brochure and volunteers who want to support the races on the night can email nosgalan@rctcbc.gov.uk for more information. ‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌
