Work To Begin On Flood-Prone PROW
Work is set to begin on a popular and well-used public right of way linking Aberaman and Cwmbach. These works will reduce instances of flooding and help make the route available for community use in all but the more extreme weather events.
Rhondda Cynon Taf Council will begin work on the public right of way in Tirfounder Fields, to the rear of Asda (known officially as PROW CWM/23/1) from August 31 and are set to be on site for four weeks.
These £45,000 Flood Alleviation Works form part of the wider three year, £200m, RCTinvest programme which is set to benefit highways, footways, town and village centres, leisure centres and play areas right across the county borough.
The public right of way, which is an important thoroughfare across the flood plain is subject to seasonal flooding and one of the benefits of the works being undertaken will be to reduce the impact of flood events on the right of way.
Over the next four weeks, work will see:
• Reconstruction of the fallen block stone structure on the river bank,
• Raising of sections of the Public Right of Way
• Installation of drainage pipes under the Northern section of the public right of way
Due to the nature of the work, it will be necessary to close the PROW between the hours of 10am and 4pm on weekdays for the duration of the project. Signage has been put in place to inform residents of the closure and the progress of the route.
Cllr Andrew Morgan, Leader of Rhondda Cynon Taf Council, said: “This Flood Alleviation work is just one scheme within the programme in place to protect the areas of the county borough that are most at risk of flooding and is a key part of the our £200m RCTinvest programme.
“There are certain public locations in RCT that are prone to such flooding and we know this is a cause of concern and frustration for some residents. This public right of way is one of those areas of concern, which is why we are taking action to reduce the instances of flooding, however noting that this public right of way crosses a main flood plain we have to recognise this route will flood from time to time during severe weather.
“Staff will be on site for four weeks from August 31 to undertake this project, which employs a number of different approaches to ensure the flood alleviation work is as effective as possible.
“Residents are thanked in advance for their cooperation and patience while we undertake this work on their behalf. We have tried to keep the closure to an absolute minimum while we deliver the investment.”
