Former Canopy Removed From Under-Demolition Oceana Building
A canopy that many thousands of Swansea revellers have walked beneath over the years has been taken down.
Working on behalf of Swansea Council, Cuddy Group took down the canopy outside the former Oceana building on Kingsway on Sunday November 27.
Internal work at the building has now been finished. Carpets, partition walls, suspended ceilings and other fixtures and fittings are among the materials to have been removed and then recycled, wherever possible.
The removal of the canopy will pave the way for scaffolding to be put up at the building over coming weeks.
External demolition, scheduled to be finished in the spring of 2017, will start early in the New Year.
Cllr Rob Stewart, Swansea Council Leader, said: “The canopy outside the former Oceana building was familiar to many thousands of people in Swansea and South Wales as a whole, having once been an iconic feature outside a series of nightclubs there over the years.
“Now that internal work has finished at the building, the canopy’s removal was needed to put scaffolding up for the start of external demolition in the New Year.
“Subject to funding, a new office development will be constructed on site, helping kick-start our plans to transform Kingsway into an employment district that would generate thousands of jobs. If the Swansea Bay City Region’s bid to the UK Government for a City Deal is approved, a digital district will also be developed on Kingsway, benefitting from world class digital infrastructure where tech businesses would flourish.”
The demolition project is being part-funded by the Welsh Government’s Vibrant and Viable Places Swansea City Centre regeneration programme that was awarded in June, 2014.
Vibrant and Viable Places (VVP) is a three-year programme (2014-2017) through which Swansea Council has been awarded more than £9 million to target key regeneration projects in the city centre.
