Historic Castle To Reopen For Easter

Historic Oystermouth Castle is reopening to the public later this month. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

The castle will be open every day from 11am to 5pm from Saturday March 26 to Friday September 30. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

It’s reopening early this year in time for the Easter break. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

Crafty fun days for children are being held at the castle from 11.30am to 3.30pm on Saturday March 26 and Saturday April 9. A Dungeons and Dragons day is taking place from 11am to 4.30pm on Saturday April 2. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

A major conservation scheme was recently carried out at Oystermouth Castle with funds from the Heritage Lottery Fund, the Welsh Government through Cadw and the European Regional Development Fund. The scheme was supported by the Friends of Oystermouth Castle. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

Some of the castle’s features include ancient graffiti art from the 14th Century, a 30-foot high glass bridge and private staircases leading from vaults to rooms once used as banqueting halls. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

Cllr Robert Francis-Davies, Swansea Council’s Cabinet Member for Enterprise, Development and Regeneration, said: “Oystermouth Castle is one of the most historic landmarks in the South Wales area. It dates back many centuries, but the recent conservation work carried out at the attraction means it will be enjoyed by many more generations to come. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

“The castle is a terrific place to base events and find out more about Swansea’s fascinating heritage. Many thousands of people visited last year, so we expect many thousands more to follow suit this spring and summer. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

“The attraction is being opened a little earlier than usual this year to cater for demand and the traditional start of the tourism season, and to give people as much choice as possible when looking for ways to keep their children entertained over the Easter break.” ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

Other forthcoming events at the castle include a Mediaeval Living History Day on Saturday April 30, an Archaeology Fun Day on Saturday July 23 and a Prince and Princesses Day on Monday August 29. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

A number of craft events, art workshops and guided tours have also been organised. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​
