More Greenery To Spruce-Up Key Swansea City Centre Road
A Swansea city centre gateway is being spruced-up with the introduction of more greenery.
Trees, plants and turfed areas are being put in place on West Way over the next fortnight as part of a major road improvement scheme that’s nearing completion there.
Swansea Council is behind the work, with funding from the Welsh Government’s Vibrant and Viable Places Swansea City Centre Regeneration programme that was awarded in June, 2014.
Vibrant and Viable Places (VVP) is a three-year programme (2014-2017) through which Swansea Council has been awarded more than £9 million to target key regeneration projects in the city centre.
The vast bulk of West Way improvement works have already been finished. Pedestrian links between Sandfields and the city centre have been improved and better traffic light phasing will help traffic flows.
Work to introduce more greenery will be finished in early December. Central reserves and traffic islands are among the areas of the road that will benefit.
Cllr Rob Stewart, Swansea Council Leader, said: “The introduction of more greenery on West Way as part of the scheme there is important because it will greatly improve the look of this busy road for residents and generate far better first impressions of Swansea. We also have plans to transform Kingsway into an employment district in future, so the appearance of nearby areas like West Way will be a factor in our drive to attract major employers and open up thousands of jobs for local people.
“There will be an element of disruption while these improvement works are on-going, but we’ll do all we can to minimise it. The works will be finished in advance of the critical Christmas trading period.”
A new road layout close to the City Bus Station has also been introduced on West Way to help bus movements.
