Music Service Needs Change To Survive
Swansea has to ring in the changes to its music service to enable it to survive into the future.
A decision will take place on Thursday on the future shape of Swansea’s music services.
Officers confirmed today changes proposed would mean there would still be a music service in Swansea and that all learners would continue to have access to high-quality music support.
But more crucially the change will allow Swansea to develop the sustainable, consistent, professionally-organised, and delivered service that schools and their pupils need.
Cabinet Members are being asked to back a proposal by Swansea Council and Neath Port Talbot Council to uncouple the current music service they jointly provide through the West Glamorgan Music Service.
A new Swansea school’s music service, building on best practice within the existing service, would be launched.
Jen Raynor, Cabinet member for Education, said: “It is important that we secure a music service which is consistent, financially-sustainable and works for schools and learners.
“We believe the current music service does not do that and by continuing with it in its current state we would risk losing it forever which no one wants.
“That’s why Swansea Council has already agreed it will be continuing funding for a music service for Swansea schools.
“We will be improving music offers to schools and families who are unable to fund private tuition.”
She added: “I would like to thank all those who have suggested ways in which our music service can improve and be the best option for our schools and children.
“It is very disappointing that a few people are continuing to misinform our young musicians and their families that this is somehow the end of the music service. It not the end at all.
“This is also not about the joint orchestras which will continue and are not part of the proposals. They will continue to operate in the same way as they do now.”
Swansea Council’s Cabinet will meet to discuss the proposals on 21 April.
