Performance To Commemorate Shakespeare Anniversary
Swansea will be marking the 400th anniversary of William Shakespeare’s death with a special performance at the city’s Dylan Thomas Centre.
The Fluellen Theatre Company is performing ‘The Soul of the Age’ at the maritime quarter attraction on Saturday April 23 – the same day the bard died in 1616.
The performance, a light-hearted celebration of Shakespeare’s works, will last for about an hour from 1pm. Directed by Peter Richards, ‘The Soul of the Age’ will also feature Douglas Gray, Bethan Johns and Claire Novelli.
Although Shakespeare’s exact birthday isn’t known, it’s traditionally celebrated on April 23, too.
Swansea Council has helped bring the special anniversary performance to the city.
Jo Furber, Literature Officer at Swansea Council, said: “William Shakespeare and Swansea’s very own Dylan Thomas are two of the most influential and revered wordsmiths of all-time. This Saturday, at the Dylan Thomas Centre, there will be an opportunity to enjoy the lives and times of both writers, thanks to the Fluellen Theatre Company’s performance and the recently refurbished Dylan Thomas exhibition that’s available at the Dylan Thomas Centre.
“Performances of this kind help raise Swansea’s profile as a city of cultural excellence where creativity and the performing arts are welcomed and encouraged.”
Tickets for ‘The Soul of the Age’ are available for £5 from www.dylanthomas.com or from the Dylan Thomas Centre on 01792 463980. Discounts are available for Passport to Leisure cardholders.
William Shakespeare wrote plays and poems. His plays were comedies, histories and tragedies. Some of his most famous works include A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Hamlet and Richard III.
