Pupils take tour of new classrooms
Pupils have been given a sneak peek of the first phase of the multi-million pound upgrade of their school.
Pentre’r Graig Primary School in Morriston is undergoing a £2.7 million upgrade to its existing buildings and a small extension too.
This week some of the pupils have been given a tour of the soon-to-be completed remodelled classrooms ahead of pupils moving into them for lessons after the February half term.
Their sneak peek was a reward for them having taken a keen interest in the project, from learning about building site safety to helping choose the colour and design of improved facilities.
The project is being delivered by Swansea Council’s Corporate Building Services team, who will be on hand to show the pupils around.
Cllr Jen Raynor, Swansea Council’s Cabinet Member for Education, said: “This really clever project makes the most of the existing school but brings it up to date so it can meet the needs of 21st Century learning and help pupils reach their potential.
“It has been designed with children and how they best learn in mind and will have a very positive impact on the education of every one of the three to 11-year-olds who attend the school in the years to come.
“I am delighted that the pupils have engaged in the project and are gaining learning experiences from it as part of the additional benefits we build into all our school investment schemes.”
The Pentre’r Graig project includes refurbishment of existing buildings, changing the layout and use of classrooms and a small scale extension to create modern and flexible learning spaces to help youngsters attain their full potential.
It will also address priority areas of backlog maintenance and remove an aging and failing demountable building too.
The works at the school are phased and the project will take around 18 months to fully complete.
The cost is being split 50/50 between Swansea Council and the Welsh Government.
The scheme is part of Swansea Council’s QEd 2020 programme that’s committed to raising standards of achievement and attainment for all children and young people through improved learning environments.
Pentre’r Graig Primary School in Morriston was created in September 2011 following the amalgamation of Pentrepoeth Infant School, Pentrepoeth Junior School and Graig Infant School.
