Six Great Ways To Keep Your Youngsters Entertained Before Christmas
The schools have broken up for Christmas but there’s still a week to go before the big day. Here are some family friendly ways to entertain the children before Santa arrives:
Swimming and Multi-Sports Camp at Penyrheol Leisure Centre.
There is a whole host of activities at Swansea Council’s Penyrheol Leisure Centre in Gorseinon between Monday (Dec 19) and Friday (Dec 23).
All youngsters under 16 can swim for FREE each day between 1pm and 2pm.
The centre will also be running crash course for those aged three or over looking to learn to swim between 10am and noon and a kayaking course between noon and 12.45pm.
For adults looking to drop off the little ones and let them have some active fun while they finish off their Christmas shopping or present wrapping there are daily multi-sports camps that can either be booked for full or half days.
Prices for the courses and sports camps vary and spaces are limited so please call the centre to book in advance on 01792 897039.
Free ‘A Child’s Christmas in Wales’ play activities at the Dylan Thomas Centre
Every day up until Friday between 10am and 4pm (12 noon close on December 23) the council-run centre’s family friendly learning space is open for free ‘A Child’s Christmas in Wales’ themed self-led play.
Activities include making a Christmas mini comic, puppets, creative writing, games, reading corner, crafts and dressing up costumes. It is great for families with children of all ages and is free, just drop-in.
City Centre Santa’s Grotto
Time is running out to meet Santa in his city centre grotto which this year is located in Portland Street near Castle Square. He and his elves remain in residence up to and including Wednesday (Dec 21) when they have to dash back to the North Pole to make final preparations for the big day.
He will be there between 12 noon and 5pm on Monday to Wednesday. The little ones will be greeted by Santa’s Elves before meeting Santa himself. All visitors to the grotto will receive a Christmas gift. There will also be an opportunity to have a photo taken with Santa for a small extra charge.
Swansea’s Waterfront Winterland
Figures show more than 10,000 people have already been ice-skating at the Museum Park attraction since it opened for the festive season.
As well as the Admiral ice-rink, a children’s ice-rink and a family funfair, Waterfront Winterland also features a big wheel, Santa’s grotto and a number of Alpine-style dining cabins. Now the kids have broken-up from school the Swansea Council run attraction is open daily between 10.00am and 10.00pm although will close at 7pm on Christmas Eve.
Special screening of the BFG
As this year marks the 100th anniversary of the birth of author Rolad Dahl there will be a screening of the film version of his classic book The BFG at the Taliesin Arts Centre at Swansea University’s Singleton Campus on Monday. Directed by Steven Spielberg, the 3D screening starts at 7.30pm. Book in advance by contacting the box office on 01792 602060.
Culture at the Glynn Vivian Art Gallery
For those who have not visited the newly refurbished Glynn Vivian Art Gallery then this week could be the ideal time. There is much to see and there is still a chance to see original works by one of the most famous artists on them all. The gallery is displaying 10 of the finest drawings by Leonardo da Vinci on loan from the Royal Collection.
The works have been selected to show the extraordinary scope of the artist’s interests, from painting and sculpture to engineering, zoology, botany, mapmaking and anatomy. The gallery is closed on Mondays.
