Swansea To Move Forward With Its Own Music Service

A new, vibrant Swansea music service is about to take shape. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

Swansea Council’s Cabinet has agreed to uncouple the current music service the council jointly provides with Neath and Port Talbot. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

Councillors have agreed there will be a music service for Swansea and that all learners will continue to have access to high-quality music support. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

And by going it alone, Swansea will have the opportunity to develop the sustainable, consistent, professionally-organised, and delivered service that schools and their pupils need. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

Joint orchestras across Swansea, Neath and Port Talbot will continue as they are unaffected by today’s decision. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

Cllr Jen Raynor, Swansea Council’s Cabinet Member for Education, said: “We believe the best way to protect the service and for children to be supported to unlock their musical aspirations is to have a music service which is consistent, financially sustainable, and works for schools and learners. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

“Today’s decision is not the end of music in the city, it is a new beginning. It will enable us to move forward on work to improve the music offer to schools and their pupils, including those unable to fund private tuition. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

The decision means Swansea Council will continue its part-funding for the service for the time being. A new Swansea schools’ music service will now be developed to be launched in September. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​
