Swansea’s Seaside Tree Vandal Has Returned

Swansea’s mystery tree vandal has returned to the seaside. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

A large maple tree has been cut with a handsaw and branches have been chopped off a pine tree on the promenade area in West Cross. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

The vandal attacks follow similar incidents in the same area in 2012, 2013 and 2015. Low-lying branches have also recently been cut off a number of trees at Underhill Park in Mumbles. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

Swansea Council is calling on anyone who knows who may be responsible to get in touch. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

Cllr Mark Child, Swansea Council’s Cabinet Member for Healthy City and Wellbeing, said: “Whoever is doing this has no regard for nearby residents or the hundreds of thousands of people who use the promenade and Underhill Park every year. This mindless vandalism undermines all the fantastic work our parks service continues to do across the city. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

“Not only is hacking away at trees in this way completely irresponsible – it’s also potentially dangerous because it leaves trees unstable in areas that are well visited by the public. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

“Our staff have now made the damaged trees safe and collected the discarded branches that were thrown on the beach, but their time is better spent on maintaining and improving the appearance of the city’s beauty spots and recreational attractions for the benefit of residents and visitors. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​
