Switch Off The Technology And Focus On Child Safety
Parents are being urged to take time off from technology – like their smartphones, tablets and computers – to help keep their children safe from accidents.
Swansea Council has announced a series of events to mark national Child Safety Week, which runs from June 6 to June 12 this year.
The week is led by the Child Accident Prevention Trust and this year’s theme is about turning off technology.
The aim is to focus on the risks caused by people being distracted by electronic devices such as mobile phones.
By turning off technology at crucial times in the day, parents can give their children their focus and keep them safer when pressures mount.
And it sets a good example to children and young people that it is good to turn off technology when crossing the road or at other times when you need to concentrate to stay safe.
Cllr Christine Richards, Swansea Council’s Cabinet Member for Children’s Services, said: “It’s important that we all learn from the message of Child Safety Week. Accidents often happen when we’re distracted. Serious accidents can happen alarmingly quickly, taking us by surprise.
“I hope the events in Swansea will help more parents find better ways of keeping their children both happy and safe.”
To help people mark and learn from the event, Swansea Council’s Family Information Service has teamed up with the police and fire service to offer a fun event for youngsters where their parents can become better informed.
The first event will be held on Tuesday June 7 from 9am to 4pm at Swansea Children’s Centre in Penlan.
Families can pop in at any time throughout the day and join in the fun with Finley the Family Information Service Bear. They can also meet Rocky the Road Safety Rooster and take part in activities including face painting, finger printing, dressing up and lots more.
Representatives from Swansea Council’s Family Information Service, road safety and water safety officers, PCSOs and the Fire Service will be on hand to offer parents and carers advice on everything from safe play and childcare to fire and road safety.
The fun heads to Mayhill Family Centre on Mayhill Road on Wednesday June 8 between 9am and 1pm.
The Swansea Family Information Service (FIS) is a one-stop shop, providing free, quality, impartial information on a wide range of childcare, children’s, family support and family-related topics and, where relevant, a signposting service.
