Welsh Language School Celebrates Success
Staff and pupils at one of Swansea’s newest Welsh medium schools are celebrating after a successful ESTYN Inspection.
National school inspectors found Ysgol Gymraeg y Cwm, in Bonymaen, to be a good school with good prospects for further improvement.
Standards, provision, and leadership, were deemed good by inspectors who concluded that the school has many strengths.
They said most pupils make good progress, are enthusiastic about their learning and co-operate effectively with their peers.
Most pupils’ literacy and numeracy skills were also found to be good and most pupils speak confidently in both languages.
The report noted that one of the schools strengths was the homely and happy ethos that ensures that all pupils and staff are appreciated and respected.
The ‘motto’ Gwnewch y Pethau Bychain (Do the small things) is a firm foundation for this caring atmosphere.
Looking to the future, inspectors said that prospects for improvement were also good because the school has a robust self-evaluation procedure and leaders know the school well. Governors are very supportive of the school and act as critical friends who challenge and hold the school to account.
Headteacher, Mrs Rhian James Collins, said: “The inspection is a reflection of the hard work and dedication of staff and governors as well as parents who have supported the new Welsh medium school since its opening in September 2012. ”
Chair of Governors, Mrs Jaci Gruffudd, said: “We are extremely proud of the schools achievements and performance. A clear strategic leadership with high expectations and a collaborative ethos is fundamental to the schools success.”
Ysgol Gymraeg y Cwm opened in 2012 as part of Swansea Council’s Quality in Education (QEd) 2020 programme to help meet the growing need for Welsh-medium places.
It began with just a nursery and reception class and has been growing ever since.
The school will now be taking forward the report’s recommendations for further development and progress.
