West Way Works To Start This Week

Work to improve a busy Swansea city centre road for motorists, buses and pedestrians is starting this week. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

Improvements planned for West Way include better pedestrian crossings, more greenery and a reduction in the amount of traffic light phasing. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

The works, expected to last until the autumn, will also include a new road layout close to the City Bus Station to help improve bus movements. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

Swansea Council is behind the works, which are being funded by the Welsh Government’s Vibrant and Viable Places Swansea City Centre Regeneration programme that was awarded in June, 2014. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

Vibrant and Viable Places (VVP) is a three-year programme (2014-2017) through which Swansea Council has been awarded more than £9 million to target key regeneration projects in the city centre. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

A number of temporary footway closures will soon be in place to accommodate the works, with diversionary route plans being made available on site to guide pedestrians. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

The pedestrian crossing between the rear service area of the Grand Theatre and the Bus Station’s vehicle entrance will also be closed for about six weeks, although the other pedestrian crossings at West Way’s junctions with Singleton Street and Wellington Street will stay open. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

It’s business as usual for traders on Plymouth Street, including Coffee Bean in the former city centre management offices. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

Phil Holmes, Swansea Council’s Head of Economic Regeneration and Planning, said: “This improvement scheme, when complete, will be enormously beneficial for many thousands of motorists and pedestrians every week. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

“Projects of this nature will inevitably lead to a certain level of disruption, but we’ll be doing all we can to minimise its impact throughout the works. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

“We’ll continue to keep residents and city centre businesses updated over coming weeks and months.” ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

A right turn will be put in place from Glamorgan Street at its junction with Oystermouth Road. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

A new traffic island to separate north and southbound traffic adjacent to the bus station will also be introduced to enable easy access for buses entering and leaving the bus station. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​
