Wild flower work to start in next month

Work will start in the next month to prepare ground for the planting of thousands of wild flower seeds across the city.
More than 120 locations will again benefit from the Swansea Council scheme this summer.
Specialist sprays will soon be applied before the planting of seeds in May. Full bloom will then be expected from the middle of June.
The wild flowers scheme is being funded by Swansea Council, Community Councils and local Ward Members via their environmental allowances.
Cllr Mark Child, Swansea Council’s Cabinet Member for Healthy City and Wellbeing, said: “Residents across Swansea and visitors to the city will be thrilled with news that the wild flowers are returning for the summer of 2016.
“To say the scheme has been popular since its introduction is an understatement. The huge amount of positive feedback we’ve had both in person and online has been a terrific vote of confidence in what we’re trying to do to improve the appearance of the city and boost biodiversity by attracting more bees and other pollinators to urban areas.
“But these magnificent flower displays don’t happen by chance. They come about thanks to the skill and hard work of dedicated staff in our parks service.
“We’ve been in discussions with Ward Members and Community Councils for some time about planting locations this summer. Even more places than ever before will benefit this year, which will help raise the spirits of many thousands of motorists, pedestrians and cyclists.”
Wild flower seeds will be planted on roundabouts and roadside verges across the city, as well as in parks.
Seed mixtures will include rainbow annual, colour bouquets orange, and carpet red and gold. The council’s parks service also works in partnership with the Friends of the Botanical Gardens, who sell the seeds during their plant sale events.
