Work Starts On Major New Health Complex In Swansea
Work has started on the construction of the first fully integrated family centre and GP surgery complex in Wales.
A site compound is now up and foundations have started to be laid for the new, state-of-the-art complex on land off Mayhill Road in Swansea.
Health and social care specialists Ashley House are developing the new complex, which will replace the existing family centre on Mayhill Road and the Mayhill GP surgery on Pen-y-Graig Road.
Swansea Council is delivering the project in partnership with Abertawe Bro Morgannwg University (ABMU) Health Board, who will provide funding for the running of the GP surgery part of the scheme.
The Welsh Government is contributing £567k to help deliver the family centre element of the project.
Work on site is being carried out by the R&M Williams Building Group, with Mayhill Pharmacy due to take up space in the new building too.
Cllr Rob Stewart, Swansea Council Leader, said: “This is yet another example of the public and private sectors coming together to work in partnership for the benefit of Swansea residents.
“The current family centre and GP surgery buildings in Mayhill are no longer fit for purpose, so this new facility will replace them and give local people access to the type of top class health and wellbeing services that will make a real difference to their lives. All under one roof in the heart of Mayhill with a focus on prevention, this new complex will tackle poverty in one of our most disadvantaged communities by giving children a great start to life and supporting families to age well.
“We’re determined to deliver this new facility as soon as possible for local people, with construction earmarked for completion by the end of the year and high quality services ready for launch in early 2018.”
Andrew Davies, ABM University Health Board chairman, said: “These new state-of-the-art facilities in Mayhill will provide a much-needed 21st century health and wellbeing centre for the local community. It is the result of the increasingly close working relationship between ABMU health board and Swansea Council and an excellent example of the excellent partnership delivering better services for Mayhill.”
Jonathan Holmes, Commercial Director at Ashley House plc, said: “Integrated service provision is really important for local people but notoriously difficult to achieve. This is why Ashley House is thrilled to be working with the Health Board and Swansea Council in Mayhill, so we look forward to the opening of the building.”
Services planned for the family centre part of the new complex include childcare for local families, cookery classes, a sensory facility, baby yoga and massage, food bank access and both handyman and outreach services. The Citizens Advice Bureau and Women’s Aid will also be running services based from the centre.
Carl Sargeant, the Welsh Government’s Cabinet Secretary for Communities and Children, said: “I am pleased the Welsh Government is able to support this new facility for the community of Mayhill. The family centre will be the base for important services offered by organisations such as Citizens Advice Bureau and Women’s Aid. It will also include the provision of a new purpose built GP surgery. By including so many vital services under one roof the centre will help give every child in the community the best possible start in life by providing them and their families with several services all in one place and by allowing those services to work together more efficiently to support them.”
