Work To Start On City’s New 3G Pitches Next Month
Work to install new full-sized 3G pitches in Swansea will kick-off next month.
Swansea Council has announced it is creating three of the all-weather facilities at Penyrheol, Morriston and Cefn Hengoed community leisure centres.
Work is due to start in the first week in April on a brand new floodlit pitch at Penyrheol with the aim of completing the project by the end of June.
April will also see work to replace the existing synthetic pitch at Morriston and that should be finished in May.
It means both should be fully operational by the start of the next football and rugby seasons.
In the past two seasons over a third of all junior football matches have been cancelled and rugby clubs have also reported incidents of junior teams losing up to six weeks of fixtures due to poor weather.
New 3G pitch confirmed for Cefn Hengoed Leisure Centre
The new 3G pitches, which have a durable, all-weather surface with porous layers that let water drain through easily, should help tackle the problem.
Last month Swansea Council’s cabinet set aside £500,000 in its budget for the next financial year for another full-sized 3G pitch at Cefn Hengoed Leisure Centre.
An announcement on when work will start there will be made in due course.
The comprehensive schools at all three sites will be able to use the new facilities, as well as local clubs for training or when their games are cancelled on other natural grass pitches because of the weather.
Cllr Mark Child, Swansea Council’s Cabinet Member for Healthy City and Wellbeing, said: “I know how eagerly anticipated these new pitches are so I’m very pleased that work on the first two will start next month and be completed in time for the next sports season.
“They will bring huge benefits to schoolchildren, local sports clubs and community groups and are part of this council’s drive to make sure top class sporting and leisure facilities are available across our city.”
