Kids’ Projects Highlight The History Of The Ancient World

Classical scholars at Swansea University are to launch two projects this summer which will help children to learn more about the history of ancient world.
Plato in the Park
The Plato in the Park project, run in collaboration with the Iris Project and the South West Wales Classical Association, is specially designed as a fun introduction for children to Latin, Ancient Greek and philosophy.
The Latin and Greek classes are suitable for 5-11 year olds, while the philosophy classes are suitable for ages 8-12, and will invite the children to consider some ‘big’ questions such as:
- Who are we?
- What is reality?
- How can we tell the difference between good and boa
- How can we be happy?
The classes are taught by students from the History and Classics Department monitored by the co-ordinator of the Swansea Classics Outreach programme Dr Evelien Bracke. They will be on five consecutive Saturdays between 4 June and 2 July between 2pm – 3.30 pm. Participants should register for the classes which cost £20 for all 5, or £5 per class. Bursaries are available.
Dr Bracke said: ‘We want to give every child the opportunity to learn about ancient languages, cultures, and philosophy in a playful, age-appropriate way, without pressure to perform and in an outdoor setting.’
School Competitions
Academics at the University’s History and Classics Department are also to run schools’ competitions for different age groups.
Primary and secondary pupils can enter a competition by submitting a piece of work about the Ancient World, featuring Greece, Rome or Egypt, on the theme of ‘heroes’.
Dr Evelien Bracke said: “Entrants can be as creative as they like and use any medium for their entry – whether it is a poster, a play, a video, models or online games. Pupils can work in team or on their own and they can be funny, informative and as imaginative as they want.”
