Adult Learners Celebrate Success At Palmerston

Adult learners gathered at Palmerston Adult Community Learning Centre recently for its annual awards presentation ceremony. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

The event was held to celebrate the achievements of adult learners in the Vale of Glamorgan, many of whom have been attending diverse Get Back on Track Courses at Adult Education centres across the county. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

Learners achieved Agored Cymru qualifications in a wide range of subjects, including: Computers at all levels, Employability Skills such as First Aid, Health and Safety and Fire Safety, Hospitality and Customer Service. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

Other learners gained skills in managing their Confidence, Counselling and British Sign Language. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

Both the Leader – Councillor Neil Moore – and Deputy Leader – Councillor Lis Burnett – of the Vale of Glamorgan Council attended the ceremony, and addressed and praised the attendees for their success. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

Councillor Moore said: “It was great to see how motivated each individual learner was. There was camaraderie between them, and they clearly enjoyed learning together. It was also obvious from the number of learners who received their certificates, some with several certificates, that they have given up a great deal of their time to attend the courses. It’s clear that by doing so meant fitting their learning experience around their employment, care or other family responsibilities. It was fantastic to be at the ceremony and to see so many people enjoying themselves. I certainly enjoyed being part of this celebration.” ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

There were also some additional presentations, on the night, for learners who have achieved the more advanced European Computer Driving License qualifications. Some of these have taken up to two years to complete. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

Get Back on Track courses allow learners to gain skills for the workplace, gain some skills and qualifications, improve their confidence, health and wellbeing, and improve their English and maths skills. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

Many learners have successfully gained employment or progressed to further education and training following attending Get Back on Track courses. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

Courses are free to those eligible, and take place in Barry, Penarth, Llantwit Major, Rhoose and St Athan. A free crèche is provided at some centres. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​
