Community Chest Riches Boost Vale Sports Clubs
A number of sports clubs and organisations have recently benefitted from Community Chest awards totalling £17,927.
These funds will be used to develop existing, or create new, sport and exercise opportunities in the Vale of Glamorgan.
The Community Chest scheme is funded by Sport Wales and managed locally by the Council’s Sports & Play Development Team. The team have been assisting clubs aiming to increase sport and physical activity opportunities for local residents in a variety of sports.
The scheme also contributes to theCouncil’s objectives of increasing health and wellbeing amongst its residents, as well as increasing skills and education.
The newly-created Barry Junior Badminton Club are one of the successful organisations to receive funding, and will use the money for facility hire costs, to send their coaches on training courses, and to purchase equipment.
Another badminton club will also reap the rewards of the Community Chest: Penarth & Dinas Powys & District Badminton Club are – due to the success of their past junior sessions – to introduce additional sessions at Penarth Leisure Centre, and target 12-16 year olds.
A number of clubs have, meanwhile, been awarded funding to contribute to one of the Community Chest panel’s priorities: coach and umpire education.
This will enable clubs to send their volunteers on training courses, including sports specific training, first aid and child protection training, and umpire / refereeing courses.
Other clubs successful in this round of the Community Chest scheme include Penybont Surf Lifesaving Club, Barry Beavers Disabled Swimming Club, Windsor Lawn Tennis Club, Barry Athletic Bowls Club and Barry Taekwondo Club.
For those representing clubs across the Vale of Glamorgan that are in need of financial aid, the next round of Community Chest funding applications must be submitted by 30 March, with the panel meeting on 13 April to decide who will receive shares of the funding.
Those interested are requested to first contact the Sports & Play Development Team, on 01446 704793, to check that their project is eligible for funding.
