Council Tax Increase Of 2.8% Proposed For The Vale

The Vale of Glamorgan Council’s cabinet has proposed an increase in council tax for the county of 2.8%. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

Cllr Neil Moore, Leader of the Council, said: “Balancing the budget in the face of continuing cuts to council funding is a task that forces some very difficult decisions. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

“In recent years we have been forced to strike a balance between minimising the financial impact on residents while ensuring we are able to fund essential services such as adult social care in a time of spiralling demand. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

“The increase in council tax equates to the £1.7m cut in funding from Welsh Government. For band D properties in the Vale this will mean an increase of less than 60p a week. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

“Despite the increase in council tax the Vale of Glamorgan Council will still be making savings of more than £4m during the next financial year in order to cancel out the effect of cost pressures such as the new national living wage that will increase the cost of delivering our services by more than £5m.” ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

Council tax for a band D property in the Vale of Glamorgan would remain below the national average for Wales but rise from £1111.23 to £1142.37. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

This proposed rise will now be put to a vote at a meeting of full council on 1 March 2017. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​
