High Street Area Set For Increased Car Parking And New Pedestrian Crossings

WORK has begun to provide more parking spaces and improve safety in a busy Barry shopping area. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

A total of 36 new car parking bays will be created around High Street in the town, with new road crossings built for pedestrians. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

The first stage of the work recently started, and the aim is for it to be completed before the Christmas lights are switched on in late November. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

It will affect York Place, High Street and Queen Street. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

Then phase two will take place between January and April, along Broad Street and Broad Street Parade. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

Ten of the extra parking spaces will be created on Broad Street, seven in the form of bays outside the former RAOB club.
And across the road, three bays will be built outside The Sir Samuel Romilly pub. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

A further 26 spaces will then be created across York Place, High Street and Queen Street. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

As part of the work, new safer crossings are being built which increase traffic visibility for pedestrians. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

They will also be more convenient for those on mobility scooters and the visually impaired. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

Meetings have been held with traders in the area to keep them informed of the works, while residents have received letters about the project. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

Businesses and residents on Broad Street/Broad Street Parade will be posted information about phase two of the plan towards the end of the month. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

As well as providing a general update, the letter will contain times and dates when appointments with officers can be booked to discuss any concerns people may have about the work. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​
