A BRAND new running group aimed at beginners is set to get more Vale of Glamorgan girls ‘on the move’. ‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌

In line with the Vale of Glamorgan Council’s Sports and Play team’s initiative, ‘Girls on the Move’, the new running group aims to increase female participation in physical activity across the Vale. ‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌

The girls-only running group, led by female coaches, begins on 16 January and will run every Monday and Thursday between 4-5pm. ‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌

Meeting at Penarth Leisure Centre, the first two weeks will involve indoor running to allow participants to get a feel for the group. Following these two weeks, the group will continue to meet at Penarth Leisure Centre, but will then jog on to different areas of Penarth. ‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌

The running group has been set up in response to the results of the School Sports Survey, which suggested girls wanted more opportunities to run in Penarth. ‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌

Cllr Gwyn John, Vale of Glamorgan Council Cabinet Member for Visible, Leisure and Regulatory Services, said of the group: “The group offers a safe and friendly way to start running, and is perfect for girls aged 14-18 with limited or no experience in running.” ‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌
