The drawn out search for a new recycling centre site in Vale of Glamorgan is set to continue, but work to improve the existing one in the west of the county has started.
Vale of Glamorgan Council leader Lis Burnett labelled the current recycling centre in Llandow “horrendous” not long after it was announced that the council had found a potential site for a replacement centre earlier in the year.
One of the main issues with Llandow Recycling Centre is the poor state of the entry road into the site. However, the council recently announced that road resurfacing is being carried out by the landowner on Tumlus Way and further work is scheduled for the new year.
Vale of Glamorgan Council cabinet member for neighbourhood and building services, Cllr Mark Wilson, said: “I am delighted that work has started to upgrade the road access to the recycling site in Llandow.
“These improvements have been requested by residents for many years and are also something local councillors have been campaigning for.
“We are still actively seeking a suitable location for a new household waste recycling centre in the western Vale, but securing an appropriate site with good access for vehicles is proving challenging and will take longer to complete.”
In April, the council said a potential site to construct the replacement recycling centre was located on land near Place for Homes in Llandow.
The local authority has been looking to develop a replacement site for the recycling centre for years. It nearly secured a location last year, but the landowner said they no longer wanted to sell the site at the last minute.
As part of the improvement works being carried out at Llandow Recycling Centre, Vale of Glamorgan Council is also negotiating an extension to the current lease at the site.
Once the initial works are completed, the council will begin repairing the road on the immediate approach to the recycling centre.
The other recycling centre in the county is Barry Recycling Centre, located on Atlantic Trading Estate. ‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌
