Vale Council Host Duke Of Edinburgh’s Award Celebration Night
The Vale of Glamorgan Council recently hosted a celebration evening for local youngsters who had gained their gold Duke of Edinburgh’s Award.
Hannah Lee and Hana Fletcher Peters, students at Cowbridge Comprehensive School, along with James Senior, Jessica Duggan and Thomas Mullett, who attend Stanwell Comprehensive School, all completed the course.
It was run by the Council’s Youth and Adult Community Learning service.
The group had to undertake a shared activity in a residential setting, participate in sport, learn or develop a new skill, volunteer and take part in a four-day expedition.
They all said participating improved their communication, teamwork and leadership skills.
It also helped them become more resilient, organised and encouraged them to play a more active role in the local community.
For all, their most memorable moments came on the expedition, whether that involved pulling team-mates out of a bog or walking for miles through knee-high grass.
National Development Officer for Boys’ and Girls’ Clubs of Wales, Grant Poiner, congratulated the individuals, recognising their achievements and personal journeys.
Cllr Lis Burnett, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Regeneration and Education, presented the award winners with their gold Duke of Edinburgh’s brooches and badges ahead of their royal presentation later this year at St James’s Palace.
She said: “Their commitment to serve their community, work with others and take on major challenges is a shining example to us all. I hope they have a wonderful and memorable day at their royal presentation and wish them well for the future.”
