Call For Evidence For Our Review Of Shooting
Natural Resources Wales (NRW) has launched a review into the use of firearms on land it manages.
It currently uses firearms to limit damage from pests and to help protected species and habitats.
It also leases some areas of land for shooting activities by third parties.
NRW’s review will consider if firearms are used for the right reasons, in the right circumstances and in the most sustainable way possible.
It will also look at how others use NRW-managed land, including some pheasant shoots.
The review was created due to implications from the new Environment (Wales) Act and following concerns from stakeholders.
NRW needs to plan and manage all its work with sustainable management of natural resources at its core.
It is now asking people for evidence to inform this review.
Ceri Davies, NRW’s Director of Evidence, Policy and Permitting said:
“We want to make the most of the land we manage for the people, economy and environment in Wales.
“This means considering the best way to manage our natural resources to build a healthy and resilient environment that can support Wales’ economy and society.
“We know there will be differing opinions about the use of firearms. This is why we want to collect as much evidence as we can, from the widest range of stakeholders possible.”
Evidence needs to be submitted by 30 April 2017.
NRW will consider the evidence to develop proposals for the use of firearms on land it manages.
It will then consult further on draft proposals, before making a final decision.
