Construction Starts On Crindau Flood Scheme
People living in Newport are invited to a drop in event to find out more about the latest plans to reduce the risk of flooding in the area.
The new scheme will improve flood protection for more than 660 properties in Crindau and Shaftesbury.
Natural Resources Wales (NRW) has appointed Galliford Try to construct the flood scheme.
Flood walls and embankments will be built along the River Usk and Crindau Pill between the M4 motorway and the mainline railway. A new amenity area will also be built to improve the local environment.
Galliford Try will be at the drop in on Monday 19 September at Shaftesbury Community Centre, between 4:30pm and 8pm, to answer any queries people may have about the construction of the scheme.
Galliford Try has started setting up its compound next door to Harold John Ltd on Adelaide Street.
Tim England, Flood Risk Manager from NRW, said:
“Keeping communities safe from flooding is one of our key roles and there is a long history of tidal flooding in Crindau.
“This scheme is important in reducing flood risk for the local residents and businesses, as well as improving local amenities.
“The drop in is a chance for people to speak to the company that will build the scheme, learn about how it will benefit the area, and ask questions they may have about the construction phase.
“We’re confident that this new scheme will really make a difference to people living and working in Crindau and Shaftesbury who have lived with the threat of flooding for many years.”
