Gull Shot With Air Rifle In Newport: RSPCA Cymru Appeals For Information
RSPCA Cymru is appealing for information after a gull was shot with an air rifle in Newport.
The bird was found on Friday (29 July) at around 3.40pm on Hammond Drive with severe injuries.
RSPCA inspector Sophie Daniels said: “The gull was shot in his right wing and was unable to fly.
“He was bleeding and the pellet was visible in the wing.
“The caller kindly took this poor gull to a vets, where sadly on veterinary advice he was put to sleep due to his severe injury.”
Anyone who may have information about this incident or similar incidents should contact the RSPCA inspectorate appeal line on 0300 123 8018. Calls are treated in confidence.
Inspector Daniels said: “We don’t know who did this, but the caller also reported that several dead gulls have been found on the street over the past week or so.”
It is an offence to injure or kill a wild bird under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 (except under licence) and offenders can face a fine of up to £5,000 and/or six months imprisonment.
