RSPCA Bryn-Y-Maen Hens Are Top Of The Flocks
To celebrate British Egg Week and World Egg Day (Oct 14), RSPCA Cymru is urging people to consider rehoming a friendly hen, from its Bryn-Y-Maen Animal Centre.
Doreen, Doris and Delilah came into RSPCA care after being rescued from terrible conditions. After lots of tender, loving, care by staff at RSPCA Bryn-Y-Maen Animal Centre, the girls are now thriving and ready to find a new home.
The friendly hens have grown in confidence since they’ve been in RSPCA care and follow staff around looking for treats. To find out more about rehoming them contact the centre on 0300 123 0745. All animals available for re-homing at the centre can also be found online.
The RSPCA rescues and rehomes hundreds of farm animals every year and more than 75 per cent of them are hens*. Last year the RSPCA also rehomed 52 ducks, six geese, 21 quails, two Guinea fowl and even one turkey.
It is vital people have the knowledge, time, commitment, space, facilities and finances to re-home such animals.
Sian Phillips, poultry welfare specialist at the RSPCA, said:
“Lots of people dream of keeping hens, ducks and geese and collecting fresh eggs.
“But before getting any feathered friends it’s really important to do your homework to find out what they need and to consider if you have the time, commitment and facilities to care for them.
“For example, have you got a source of open water, like a pond or lake for a duck to swim on, do you mind hens scratching around in your flower beds?
“There’s some great information on our website about keeping farm animals as pets and also how to apply to rehome them.”
