South Wales AM Goes Out On Call With RSPCA Inspector

Regional Assembly Member for South Wales Central, David Melding, has accompanied RSPCA inspector Selina Chan on several calls in and around the region. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

The ride-along on Thursday (18 August) gave Mr Melding a chance to experience what RSPCA inspectors deal with on a day-to-day basis. Throughout the course of a busy day, they dealt with a number of routine calls. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

Mr Melding said: “Experiencing first-hand the work RSPCA inspectors carry out has given me a lot of food for thought, especially around the complex needs of animals and the reasons why people mistreat and abandon their animals. I will use this experience to ensure that the Assembly continues to lead the UK in improving animal welfare.” ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

RSPCA inspector Selina Chan said: “’The RSPCA receives approximately 50,000 calls from within Wales each year and in 2015 we collected or rescued over 7,500 animals.’ ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

“I am grateful to David for taking time out of his busy diary to allow me to show him the work that RSPCA inspectors do day in, day out across Wales and England, and the diversity of issues we deal with in the interests of animal welfare.” ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

A number of Assembly Members and Members of Parliament across Wales have spent days-out with local RSPCA inspectors, gaining valuable insight into the work the Society does to uphold and improve standards of animal welfare. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​
