Business Students ‘Invest £10k’ In The Stock Market – With Interesting Results
Wrexham business students teamed up to ride the stock waves to gain ‘investors’ experience.
Students at Wrexham Glyndwr University’s North Wales Business School took part in the ‘DTCC Investor Games’, where they had the opportunity to invest a hypothetical £10,000 in companies listed on the London Stock Exchange, to determine who could make the most profit.
Throughout the five-month ‘investor’ experience, sponsored by The Depository Trust and Clearing Corporation (DTCC), a financial services company based in Wrexham, the teams monitored multiple buy and sell shares on a weekly basis, without actually placing any money down, to maximise their mock fund value.
Chris Jones, Head of NWBS, said: “It became clear that the teams which won really went above and beyond in terms of researching the stock market, having a strategy and making inspired investment choices.
“Of course, there was an element of good fortune, but they were calculated risks, such as purchasing Royal Mail shares in the New Year following reports of strong online consumer spend over the Christmas period.
“The game provided fantastic learning for our students within a safe environment which is what we aim to give every student at the North Wales Business School.”
The winning team, Wrexham Warriors, made a hypothetical profit of £1,665 by ‘investing’ in Utility companies such as British Gas.
They won a weekend in London including travel, accommodation, sightseeing trips and passes into an event night at Richard Branson’s rooftop gardens for the three team members.
The top three teams attended a formal lunch at the university last week where they were presented with their prizes by Paul Barlow, site lead at DTCC Wrexham and chief operating officer of Avox Data Services.
Mr Jones said: “DTCC really helped to give the game added kudos and I am so grateful to them and Paul Barlow, for making it possible.
“DTCC is a superb role model for community development and we are very fortunate to have them within our region.”
Mr Barlow, said: “North Wales is a great place to do business – with talented employees, a strong student population and an extremely supportive community.
“In fact, we’ve grown 10-fold since we opened our local office over a decade ago, with more than a third of our staff having come through Glyndwr University, Coleg Cambria or other colleges in the local area.
“We’re committed to building local partnerships for continued success and we look forward to working together.”
The runners-up, Quidz-In made a gain of £1,059 and won a comedy night out in Liverpool including travel, accommodation and entry. The team invested in Home in anticipation of a buyout from Sainsbury’s – a gamble which didn’t pay off.
The team in third place, Business as Usual, made a profit of £445 and won a VIP night in Chester.
