Innovative product designer helps inspire Wrexham Glyndwr University students

Wrexham Glyndwr University guest speaker inspires design students to aim high stating ‘film makers dream of the future but we will design it’. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

The designer of the first pocket mobile phone Dick Powell, one of the founders of Seymour Powell, a design and innovation consultancy, visited the university for its Creative Futures conference on Tuesday. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

Addressing the students and visitors, he said: “I believe design fundamentally is making things better, not just beautifully executed but better for the world. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

“There is an important link between innovation and design. My whole life I’ve been trying to innovate – I think something that only looks great is not good enough. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

“Most things you will work on won’t reach the market for another few years, so we must look into the future. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

“Film makers dream about the future but we will design it.” ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

Seymour Powell has created world-first innovation solutions from the first cordless kettle and pocket mobile phone, to 21st Century solutions in sustainable transportation, e-payment and water filtration. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

Dick shared his belief with students that design and innovation are about making life better for people, whilst making it better for business and the environment in which we live in. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

After the seminar, Dick said: “It is extremely important to hold events like this. I remember when I was a design student in the early 70s we had three design experts talk to us and they were so inspiring. And it connects students to what the real world is doing. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

“It is particularly important that art and design students experience all disciplines. They must think about what they are going to do after they finish university. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

“It so competitive in this market and succeeding is hard but those who are talented and determined can make it.” ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

Dick is also chairman of D&AD (Design and Art Direction) Awards, a non-profit association. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

Ahead of this year’s Professional D&AD Awards, Dick said: “I look forward to the awards every year. As the award chairman I get to see all the work and it is the most inspiring. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

“We have turned it into a festival this year for designers so people can come and look at the work. D&AD awards is a charity and all profit goes towards education helping the next generation of creative talent.” ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

Senior Lecturer in Graphic Design, Pauline Amphlett described D&AD award as the Oscars for designers. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

Pauline said: “It has been fantastic to have Dick Powell visit Glyndwr University and take the time to travel to North Wales and talk to our students. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

“To have the chairman of D&AD Awards visit us is an honour. Winning an award is the equivalent of winning an Oscar in the design world. The awards are very sought after and we have had students win in the past.” ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​
