Open Day A Big Success As University Prepares For Autumn Recruitment Drive
Prospective students visited North Wales to see the best of Wrexham Glyndwr University at a popular open day.
Hundreds of people attended the event on Saturday, where the University showcased its Schools of Business, Creative Arts, Social and Life Sciences, and Applied Science, Computing and Engineering.
The institution is now gearing for another open day on Saturday, November 12, and postgraduate open evenings this Wednesday (October 19) and on November 16.
Among the guests appearing on this week’s programme will be Professor Neil Thompson, an international well-being expert and Visiting Professor at Wrexham Glyndwr, where he helps to deliver the new MSc Advanced Practice in the Human Services online qualification.
A published author, Professor Thompson is to give a talk entitled, Making Sense of Grief.
“I’m glad to be able to speak on this subject and hope we see lots of people there on the evening,” he said.
“Grief is an inevitable part of human experience, but what exactly is it? What is happening to us when we are grieving?
“I’ll discuss and clarify these points and explain why it is important that we have a good knowledge of what grief is all about. “
Professor Thompson added: “Wrexham Glyndwr has a wide range of postgraduate courses, there is something to suit everyone and I encourage people to attend and find out more about them.”
With more than 200 publications spanning traditional print, e-books and virtual e-learning formats, Professor Thompson is a household name in the UK social care sector.
He is also an accomplished international conference speaker on various aspects of social well-being and has worked for over 19 years as a provider of training and consultancy services to organisations across the public, private and voluntary sectors in the UK and abroad.
Having only joined the School of Social and Life Sciences this year, he said: “There is excellent potential at the University and I am looking forward to helping to take things forward.
“Our combined strengths will give us an excellent platform to make an important contribution to higher education.”
The online MSc in Advanced Practice in the Human Services, due to launch in January 2017, will focus on Professor Thompson’s published work.
“We are in an era where many practitioners are looking to develop to the next level, and that is what this Master’s is intended to facilitate,” he said.
“It will give students the opportunity to map out their career progression plan and help to equip them to make that plan a reality.”
It has been a busy few months for the North Wales institution, as students returned and started in Wrexham and Northop following good news including a 5% increase in student satisfaction and an employability level of 92.1%.
Vice-Chancellor, Professor Maria Hinfelaar, says the success of recent activities will act as a launch pad for a successful academic year.
“The open days we’ve held this year were very successful, and we’re hoping to see similar if not better numbers in November, and at our postgraduate open evenings,” she said.
Reflecting on the rise in student satisfaction, as a result of the National Student Survey, Professor Hinfelaar added: “Our students are at the heart of everything we do, which is why we will continue to strive for better.”
