Sky’s The Limit For Teenager Who Won The Chance To Test University’s Flight Simulator

A Wrexham schoolboy’s dreams reached new heights as he took control of Wrexham Glyndwr University’s flight simulator. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

Josh Evans, 13, from Wrexham, won the chance to experience flying an Airbus jumbo jet, Typhoon style aircraft and a space rocket, at Techniquest Glyndwr’s Let’s Go on an Engineering Adventure community fun day. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

After successfully completing an engineering challenge Josh, an Air Cadet, was invited to Wrexham Glyndwr University on Monday (August 22) to test out their flight simulator. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

Richard Day, Professor of Composites Engineering, said: “I was delighted to welcome Josh and his family to the university’s engineering department and show him how to use our flight simulator. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

“He definitely had a natural talent for it and a keen interest in flying. He did a brilliant job flying difficult aircrafts. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

“The engineering team is excited to continue supporting Techniquest Glyndwr’s innovative community project and inspire the local community about engineering and all the things it can deliver to improve people’s lives.” ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

Techniquest Glyndwr is holding another community event on September 10, the same day Wrexham Glyndwr University is hosting its Open Day on Wrexham campus. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

The Let’s Go on an Engineering Adventure project is funded by the Royal Academy of Engineering’s Ingenious scheme, which selects and funds the most creative impactful projects that engage the public with engineers and engineering. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

The community project also involves taking engineering activities out to other community events across North Wales in order to promote the work of engineers and generate interest in the wide range of engineering careers available. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

Project administrator, Hannah Marubbi, said: “We had a lot of people take part in our engineering competition at our community fun day, but Josh completed the challenge in a record time and came away with the top prize. He was so pleased to have won as he was starting Air Cadets and was very excited at the idea of a ride in Glyndŵr’s flight simulator. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

“I’m glad Josh enjoyed his prize and look forward to running similar competitions at future events to get more people as excited about engineering.” ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​
