Two Art Students Win £1,000 Scholarship At Wrexham Print Centre For The Summer

Two Wrexham students have won a £1,000 print making scholarship at a print centre this Summer. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

The Wrexham Glyndwr University art students have won Proof Scholarships awarded by the Regional Print Centre, in Wrexham, and will be attending placements involving workshops on different printing techniques. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

Neil Parry, a Graphic Design and Multimedia student and Clare Orr, who studies Applied Arts at the university’s School of Creative Arts, both applied for the scholarships to gain experience in the area of print making, before starting their second year at the university this September. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

Neil said: “I think this experience will be of great value to me and has already proved that my ‘traditional’ printing skills can be used alongside new developments in the field – my recently acquired knowledge of the workings of the Apple Mac Book Pro for example. Any new knowledge will obviously be very useful and hopefully put to good use when producing work in the future. The staff and the visiting lecturers are, as expected, very professional and helpful and other members of the group(s) are all very friendly.” ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

The Regional Print Centre, is an artist focused organisation based at the print studio in Coleg Cambria, Wrexham, and offers these printmaking scholarships each year. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

Clare said: “I have attended the electro etch, experimental resist and screen printing course already and I have also been using the print centre to practice the techniques I have learnt so far. I am really enjoying it and it is a wonderful opportunity. The experts have been fantastic, they are excellent at sharing their knowledge.” ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

The School of Creative Arts at Wrexham Glyndwr University was named 12th in the UK and top in Wales in the recent Guardian University Guide. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

Pauline Amphlett, Wrexham Glyndwr University programme leader for Graphic Design Multimedia, said: “Opportunities like this are vital for our students. It really does give them a chance to stretch their wings and fly high. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

“By applying for this particular type of scholarship opportunity they go through a screening and interview process, so they get an idea if one of the selector’s is drawn to their portfolio of creative work. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

“The scholarships will also give our students an opportunity to gain some new print techniques and add work to their developing portfolios. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​
