Wrexham Glyndwr University and Wrexham AFC have signed a contract that signals a new future for the Racecourse stadium. ‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌

The University – which purchased the landmark in 2011, saving it from possible extinction – has handed operational control of the ground over to the football club from today (August 1) as part a 99-year lease. ‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌

Maxine Penlington OBE, chair of the Board of Governors, Vice-Chancellor Professor Maria Hinfelaar, and Gavin Jones and chairman Peter Jones from Wrexham Supporters Trust (WST) joined forces at the University to put pen to paper on the business purchase agreement and lease. ‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌

Lynda Powell, Director of Operations at Wrexham Glyndwr University, said: “Wrexham Glyndwr University is pleased to have entered into an agreement for the sale and purchase of the stadium business , alongside the 99-year lease of the Glyndwr University Racecourse Stadium to Wrexham AFC. ‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌

“The University will remain as freeholders of the stadium but Wrexham AFC now has the security of having a very long lease and will also be able to capitalise on conferencing, catering and event opportunities. ‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌

“We will continue to work closely together to ensure a smooth transition for the benefit of the town, from a sporting, academic and social perspective, and wish Wrexham AFC the best of luck for the future.” ‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌

Gavin Jones added: “We are delighted that we have now exchanged contracts and we now have control of our historic home. We would like to thank Wrexham Glyndwr for their hard work in pulling this deal together.” ‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌
