University Offers Aspiring Journalists Big Bursary To Nearly Half Their Course Fees
Aspiring journalists have the chance of a special grant to help them break into their career through a top ranked course at Wrexham Glyndwr University.
The north Wales university has run a one-year journalism course in partnership with local media groups for eight years.
The standard university fee for the course is £4,500 but the university is offering a bursary of £1,900 to help up to six students complete the programme.
Course leader, Janet Jones, said that bursary decision had been taken to help budding journalists in the area gain the essential qualifications for a career in journalism and increase diversity in the industry.
“Those wanting a career in journalism need the National Council for the Training of Journalists qualifications and stacks of work experience. But it can be very expensive for young people to achieve both of those.
“We are the only course in Wales outside of Cardiff which can give students the NCTJ qualifications. But our students also spend two days a week in newsrooms on work placement learning the job with our partner media groups. We want to make sure, through the bursaries, that that package is within the reach of all potential journalists from all backgrounds,” she said.
Wrexham Glyndwr University has already made the course available over two years to help students spread the cost of achieving the essential NCTJ qualifications. Support and resources are also available through the university’s careers and zone centres, to help students manage work experience placements.
The course was ranked fourth out of all NCTJ undergraduate courses in the UK for its overall NCTJ results in 2013-14 and was second in the national NCTJ part-time course rankings in 2014-15.
