WGU Drives Pioneering Education Project

Wrexham Glyndwr University has been driving a pioneering scheme to promote lifelong learning. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

The University’s widening access coordinator, Sarah-Lou Gaffney, led a team of organisations visiting community centres, libraries and public spaces across the county on the Wrexham Learning Bus. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

The Festival of Learning is a national celebration featuring ‘Have a Go’ education events which have taken place since the beginning of May at sites in Acton, Brynteg, Caia Park and Hightown, Coedpoeth, Gwersyllt, Llay and Plas Madoc. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

In collaboration with project funding body The Learning and Work Institute, representatives from the University and other adult learning and service providers were out and about offering free information, advice and guidance and fun taster workshops. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

Among them were Techniquest Glyndŵr, Caia and Hightown Communities First and Workers Educational Association. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

“We’ve been thrilled at the uptake by the public throughout the project,” said Sarah-Lou. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

“By taking ‘Have a Go’ opportunities into the community we are widening the access to learning at all levels and giving people in some of the most isolated areas of the county the chance to try their hand at something new. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

“That will hopefully lead on to further learning and help address personal issues such as low self-confidence and motivation as well as higher level issues such as social mobility and employability.” ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

Among the venues during Adult Learners’ Week, which began on Monday, was Gwersyllt Community Resource Centre. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

Manager Sandra Gardner thanked the team for joining them and said the innovative scheme had been well-received by visitors. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

“We’ve had a tremendous response to our events over the past few weeks to promote learning opportunities for local people,” said Sandra. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

“Monday’s information roadshow was the highlight, with local organisations working in partnership to provide information about adult education in Wrexham.” ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

Workshops included aromatherapy, British Sign Language, social media for employability, mindfulness, learn to play piano and more. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

The Festival of Learning comes to a close on Saturday with a roadshow on Wrexham’s Queens Square. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​
