Wrexham Glyndwr University Joins Forces With CAIS And AVOW For Big Lottery-Funded Radio Project
A £500,000 National Lottery-funded project will see recovering drug and alcohol users bid to capture the single biggest collection of stories of people’s lives in North Wales through radio.
AVOW, Wrexham Glyndwr University and CAIS have joined forces to launch the initiative which will gather stories via a mobile podcasting van over the next three years.
The project will be led by DragonTale Productions, a Big Lottery Funded Radio Production Company.
DragonTale Productions is the new name for Recovery Radio, a project run through AVOW which has provided ambassadors in Recovery to record, edit and produce world-class radio content.
Using a purpose-built purple van kitted out (pictured below) with professional broadcasting equipment, DragonTale will tour North Wales collecting a story archive, engaging with communities while equipping recovering substance users and members of the public with new skills.
A weekly one-hour show featuring interviews with people at the heart of Welsh communities will be made available online during the course of the three-year project.
Regular broadcasts will also go out via community radio stations in North Wales, including Point FM, Radio Flintshire, Deeside Radio and Tudno FM.
Broadcasting, journalism and media communications students are supporting the project with presenting roles and behind-the-scenes research.
Angela Ferguson, Senior Lecturer in Journalism and Media Communications, said: “This is a fantastic project on so many levels, from community engagement to skills. For Wrexham Glyndwr University students it’s a unique opportunity to work on a real-life initiative which will provide them with the skills they need as a journalist as they prepare to embark on careers in the media.
“We’re delighted to be working with DragonTale Productions, AVOW and CAIS and we’re looking forward to hearing all of the stories over the coming months.”

“We want to hear from everyone, from all walks of life and we’ll be as visible as possible in all of the communities we visit.”
